Nestled within Toronto’s North Riverdale neighbourhood and just steps from Withrow Park, Riverdale House represents a careful integration of modern design sensibilities into the framework of a traditional Edwardian residence. The project reimagines the character of the home while preserving its sense of place, offering a contemporary dwelling for a small family intent on creating their forever home.

The design was guided by the client’s vision of a house that supports both a dynamic lifestyle and the needs of a growing family. Strategies of efficiency, flexibility, and natural light informed the planning, with a particular focus on maximizing the potential of the narrow lot.

On the ground floor, the plan was opened to encourage daylight to permeate the depth of the home. Custom built-in cabinetry throughout the house provides not only much-needed storage but also defines distinct zones, creating subtle yet dramatic thresholds between functions. Curved corners and softened edges encourage movement through the compact spaces, a motif carried outward to the street façade with the addition of a dormer defined by a radiused corner that subtly reinterprets the home’s traditional silhouette.

At the interiors, the Master Oak HPL perfectly allowed for the construction of the curved surfaces which were integral to the design. Paired with matching Master Oak HPL panels, these materials combined seamlessly to create the sculptural pieces that define the character of the house.

The third floor was entirely transformed into a private sanctuary for the owners, featuring a lightfilled ensuite, generous walk-in closet, and expansive roof deck. At every level, the design emphasizes connections to the outdoors, with decks and walk-outs that extend the living spaces and bring natural light and greenery deep into the home.

Riverdale House embodies the balance between tradition and transformation, respecting the character of its Edwardian roots while introducing contemporary interventions that prioritize light, flow, and family life. Through careful detailing and an emphasis on spatial generosity, the
project reveals how, even within the constraints of a narrow urban home, architecture can create a sense of openness, intimacy, and permanence.
